Unidirectional and Bidirectional Current Measurement

Bidirectional current-sense amplifiers have the ability to measure both charge and discharge currents. Maxim has improved the performance of these devices by developing the industry's first signed bidirectional CSA. It offers twice the dynamic range of an unsigned CSA.
 
Unidirectional CSAs measure currents only in one direction (Figure 1). Figure 1. Uni-directional CSA

Bidirectional CSAs measure currents in both directions (Figure 2). Note that the signed-output format doubles the dynamic range of the amplifier (Figure 3).
